The full closure of all Niagara-bound lanes on the Burlington Skyway bridge has been pushed to Oct. 20.

The closure, part of an ongoing project that kicked off earlier this year, was originally planned for Friday, Oct. 13, with Oct. 14 as a back-up.

Now, the closures will take place on Oct. 20, with Oct. 21 as a back-up.

On Oct. 20, full closures will begin at 9:30 p.m. and end at 11 a.m.

During the closures, the following on-ramps will not be accessible:

  • All lanes on the Fort Erie-bound QEW beyond Northshore Boulevard/ Hwy 2 to the south of the Burlington Skyway will be closed.
  • The on-ramp to the Fort Erie-bound QEW from Northshore Boulevard/Hwy 2 southbound will be fully closed.
  • The on-ramp from Plains Road southbound will be fully closed
  • The on-ramp from Fairview Street southbound will be fully closed
  • QEW Niagara-bound collector lane split at Eastport Drive (N-S Ramp, North of the Canal), will be closed

Closures to the Burlington Skyway for repairs have been shutting the bridge to all Niagara-bound traffic on Friday nights since they began earlier this year.

The work along the bridge in the Niagara-bound lanes has been ongoing since the summer. This has led to intermittent lane closures but has confused drivers because the schedule keeps changing.

When the project began, complaints from Niagara politicians about disruption to tourist traffic led the MTO to adjust its work schedule. As well, the weather has also caused some work to be cancelled. As a result, the project, which should have been completed by now, is ongoing.

The MTO says the lane closures are necessary for workers to make repairs to the aging bridge.
