A change to allow four units on one property in Burlington is the topic of a community meeting.

It has been a year since the City of Burlington council voted in favour of consulting the public on increasing the range of housing options by allowing four units on one property.

The city now seeks feedback on the Official Plan Amendment needed to increase housing options. A virtual open house is happening on Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and there are more community meetings scheduled.

Fourplexes have been suggested as one way to help increase affordable housing options. Mississauga voted to allow fourplexes last year.

Like other cities, Burlington hopes to address the “missing middle” by adding more housing options. The missing middle is typically defined as a lack medium-density housing in communities.

Burlington is considering a phased approach to permit up to four units for a total of three additional residential units, in addition to the principal unit, on residential properties, a report to council states.

In January, $21,156,248.60 in federal funding was announced for Burlington to encourage more affordable homes with a target of 2,724 permitted housing units by 2027.

People can have their say Thursday evening or at other open houses planned this month.

Other open houses are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Central Arena Auditorium and Thursday, Oct. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Appleby Ice Centre Community Room 1 and another virtual open house is on Monday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m.
