An upcoming information session with Metrolinx will explain how the construction of a train overpass between Burlington and Oakville will affect traffic in the years to come.

Work has already started on the major project that will occur along the Lakeshore West GO Line and eventually create the overpass over Burloak Dr.

To be carried out by Metrolinx, the Ontario agency responsible for integrating transit systems in Southern Ontario, when complete, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion through the area by eliminating the ground-level train crossing.

The project will also ultimately allow the expansion of Burloak to six lanes as well as create improvements to nearby routes such as Wyecroft Rd., Harvester Rd., Superior Crt. and Prince William Dr. The addition of turn lanes, sidewalks, bike lanes and improved connectivity for active modes of travel will also be included in this project.

Upgrades to the pedestrian bridge on Drury Lane will also be carried out.

The work is not only potentially good news for motorists who regularly use the area. Metrolinx says the project will also provide the opportunity to electrify the train lines, allowing for more frequent train service.

The project is estimated to be completed by mid-2026.

Also, a full closure will need to occur on Burloak at some point and could last for more than a year once it begins. The date for that phase of the project has not yet been determined.

The City of Burlington and the Town of Oakville have also committed funds to the project.

In the meantime, a public open house where Metrolinx representatives will be available to answer questions will take place on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Central Branch of the Burlington Public Library, 2331 New St.
