Fees to use Halton dump rising for residents of Oakville, Burlington, Milton

The cost for residents of Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills to take their garbage to the dump is about to rise.

A recommendation for next week’s Halton Region council meeting will see a new user fee schedule, the first increase since the program was established in 2006.

According to a report, the minimum user fee has not kept pace with cost pressures.

“The proposed user fee schedule will establish one flat fee for loads weighing 150 kilograms or less. This flat fee will be $10 commencing April 1, 2024. There is no change to the list of material that can be disposed free of charge,” reads the report.

The Halton Waste Management Site provides opportunities for Halton residents to drop off general waste, reusable goods, recyclable material and yard waste. The main purpose of the container station is to provide a convenient, supervised facility.

The fee structure changes will see the elimination of two flat fees for loads under 150 kg, moving to one fee for loads up to 150 kg.

The flat fee for residential yard waste will increase from $5/load to $10/load.

There will be no charge for disposal of:

• Tires (maximum of 10)
• Electronics
• Residential hazardous waste
• Eyeglasses
• Natural bottle corks
• Residential Blue Box and source-separated organic materials

The fee per load will apply to:

• Residential yard waste
• Non-reinforced bricks, concrete, rubble
• Clean fill
• Woodchips

Moving forward the $10 flat fee will be reviewed annually to determine if inflationary cost increases are required.

“The proposed user fee schedule for the Halton Waste Management Site will eliminate multiple tier user fees for small loads and will assist in the recovery of costs to operate the Halton Waste Management Site that have increased since 2006.”
