In a commitment to fostering a vibrant and livable community for all, the Town of Oakville says it is enhancing training, particularly for known and unknown disabilities, to further improve town services and customer experience.

The additional training is included in the Town of Oakville Multi-Year Accessibility Plan 2024-2029 (MYAP), which was approved by the Town Council at a meeting earlier this week.

MYAP is part of how the town embeds accessibility into all plans, strategies, and development standards and supports the town’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Multi-Year Plan

The new five-year plan meets and, in some areas, exceeds the province’s requirements for accessibility standards. It builds on the accomplishments of previous accessibility outlines and incorporates feedback from the community.

“As we strive towards creating a vibrant and livable community for all, the 2024-2029 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan helps ensure that everyone has equitable access to the town’s services, programs, and facilities, and where everyone feels they belong,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

Presented in a new, accessible web format, the town says the plan includes trends related to what an accessible Oakville means to the community.

As well as enhanced training, other areas of focus and actions to move the town forward include:

  • Strategies and initiatives to support neurodiverse individuals being explored and integrated into programs, services, communication, and facilities across the town.
  • Implementation of the Oakville Universal Design Standards (OUDS) 3.0, developed to incorporate an inclusive and accessible lens to all new construction, renovations, and upgrades to town facilities.
