A fire in a furnace late Wednesday morning (July 5) led to the evacuation of an Oakville industrial complex.

Emergency services were called to Polar Sapphire on Plymouth Dr. just before 11:40 a.m. after reports of smoke and intense heat coming through the ventilation system.

Employees were immediately evacuated from the complex.

The fire in the furnace, which produces powder from aluminium oxide, was contained before employees were able to return to the building.

No injuries were reported.

The Oakville Fire Department is investigating what caused the fire.

Founded in 2012, Polar Sapphire has developed a “breakthrough process” for manufacturing the world’s highest-purity low-cost High Purity Alumina (HPA).

HPA is used in lithium-ion batteries to coat the separator between the anode and cathode, which improves its thermal capacity.
