Earth Day is about a month away and the Town of Milton already has several events planned.

“The Town of Milton strives to be good stewards of the environment year-round, with a number of events occurring in and around Earth Day,” said a Town spokesperson.

“We encourage Milton residents to participate in these events, rain or shine, to celebrate Earth Day give back to our environment, and keep outdoor spaces safe and clean for all to enjoy.”

In recognition of Earth Day, which is officially April 22, Milton is planting several hundred trees and shrubs this spring and later this fall with their environmental partners Sustainable Milton and Conservation Halton. This is in addition to the hundreds of trees being planted in streetscapes and parks.

Several spring cleanups are also being planned.

From April 13 to 27 there’s a two-week general community cleanup. Kits will be available at the Milton Sports Centre during the facility’s hours of operation and will contain gloves, garbage bags, and a map of surrounding areas.

On Saturday, April 20, there’s a community cleanup in being held in partnership with Sustainable Milton from 9 a.m. to noon at the Milton Sports Centre and surrounding area. Gloves, pickers, and bags will be available and teams will be sent to various areas.

Spring planting day, being held in partnership with Sustainable Milton and Conservation Halton, is May 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at Milton Sports Centre. Planting supplies will be provided.

Anyone who participates in local cleanups, is asked to email [email protected] with details so they can pick up the garbage bags in a timely manner. Ensure the bags are located near existing park trash receptacles or areas outlined in the cleanup maps.

In addition, you can send pictures of your efforts in keeping Milton clean so they can be shared on social media.

Here are some other ways you can get involved:

  • Complete Milton’s Earth Day scavenger hunt
  • Use reusable bags and utensils
  • Cook a plant-based meal
  • Ride a bike
  • Use a reusable water bottle
  • Save electricity and turn off lights when you leave a room
