Drivers and cyclists, behave yourselves — Halton police are focusing on areas with high volumes of cycling across Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills starting Saturday.
Whether you’re “a cyclist, motorist, or pedestrian, being aware of and respecting each other’s vehicles is the first step to increasing everyone’s safety on the road,” said traffic services Staff Sgt. Rob Lloyd, adding it’s “a shared responsibility.”
The campaign is aiming to promote safe cycling and educate the public about rules covered under the Highway Traffic Act.
Six cyclists have been killed in crashes on Halton roads since 2010.
More than 100 collisions take place between cyclists and motor vehicles each year in the region.
This is the first year police are conducting this campaign, focusing on education, awareness, and high-visibility enforcement of traffic laws throughout Halton Region.
Sixty-one per cent of residents surveyed by police in March 2016 identified traffic safety and enforcement as a key concern.
After receiving complaints last fall, police teamed up with the municipalities, public health unit, and members of the cycling community to develop an education strategy.
The campaign ends July 16.
