Proposed retirement home for Cumberland Ave. and New. St. in Burlington.

A seven-floor retirement home has taken a step closer to becoming a reality in Burlington.

A City of Burlington committee has given its approval for the project but will still have to go before City council before construction work can begin.

Slated for the corner of New St. and Cumberland St. on land currently occupied by five homes, the proposed seven-storey building designed for those with memory issues will consist of 124 units of various sizes with 44 parking spaces. and a courtyard.

At the committee meeting, several residents voiced concerns about the project and suggested that if built it would drastically change the neighbourhood and lower the value of their property.

Others were also concerned about increased traffic in the area and the loss of mature trees.

City council will deal with issue at its Jan. 16 meeting.
