A summer blitz to crack down on unplated motorcycles in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills resulted in numerous charges and five vehicles being impounded.

Project #Unplated was initiated by Halton police due to an unprecedented amount of unplated motorcycles failing to stop for police officers, an act most often seen during the warm summer weather.

“These unplated motorcycles are often used in racing, stunt driving and dangerous driving occurrences,” said a Halton Regional Police spokesperson.

“Throughout the summer, photos of unplated motorcycles seen driving throughout the region of Halton were posted to police social media accounts in order to generate tips from members of the public in identifying these motorists.”

As a result of Project #Unplated, 51 motorcycles that had their licence plates concealed/obstructed or not present were identified. The intelligence gathered was shared with other GTA police services to assist with their own investigations.

Police used a variety of techniques to strategically and safely stop the motorcycles in order to prevent pursuits and protect public safety. Where appropriate, officers exercised discretion to educate involved motorcyclists who had not been involved in reckless behaviour.

However, charges were laid in some instances. They included fail to stop for police, stunt driving, no insurance, using a fake plate, improper muffler, unnecessary noise, careless driving and speeding.

In addition, five motorcycles were towed/impounded by police during the course of the project.

“Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users and over-represented in collision fatalities. Halton police hope this increased enforcement through Project #Unplated will help save lives and increase the safety of our roads for all users. Though Project #Unplated is formally completed, the same enforcement activity will continue.”
