Cops begin crackdown on bad driving near Burlington schools

With the start of the new school year, Halton Regional Police have pledged to step up the vigilance against unsafe driving in school zones…and they are doing just that.

As part of increased enforcement in areas where students police have issued several tickets including one on Mountainside Dr. this morning (Sept. 11).

According to police, just after 8 a.m. in front of Clarksdale Public School, a driver was pulled over for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Aside from the ticket for not stopping, the driver is also facing several other charges for being behind the wheel with a suspended licence and having no insurance, among other issues.

The enforcement comes on the heels of Project Safe Start, a back-to-school initiative launched by Halton police.

“Just as road safety is a shared responsibility, so too is protecting the most vulnerable people in our community – children,” said police Chief Stephen Tanner at the start of this, the 16th year of the campaign.

Project Safe Start is meant to remind drivers to slow down, obey the rules of the road, and be mindful of their surroundings as traffic increases with the back-to-school period.

During the program, police have pledged to have an increased presence around schools and to step up enforcement.
