Convenience stores start selling beer and wine: Find out where in Burlington

There will be no shortage of convenience stores and gas bars in Burlington that will soon be able to sell alcohol.

After a brief vetting period by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, 54 locations have been granted a licence and will start selling on Sept. 5. Others are expected to soon follow.

The approval means these small stores will be allowed to sell beer, wine, cider and coolers. This is in addition to what is available at large grocery stores, the LCBO, the Beer Store and some specialty shops.

Announced last spring, the move delivers on a long-held promise by Premier Doug Ford to provide more options and to bring alcohol sales to neighbourhood stores.

“We are giving consumers in Ontario the choice and convenience every other Canadian enjoys,” said Ford at the time. “People in Ontario, like many Canadians across the country, will have the option to responsibly and conveniently purchase a case of beer or a bottle of wine on their way up to the cottage or to a summer barbecue, all while having even more opportunity to support local Ontario breweries and wineries.”

The sales won’t be available in time for the upcoming last long weekend of the summer.

Ford’s goal, ultimately, is to allow the sale of alcohol in every convenience, grocery and big-box store in Ontario by the end of this year if they choose to take part in the program.
