Construction on Canal Lift Bridge will impact Hamilton and Burlington traffic

A continuing overhaul of the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge will lead to a slowdown of traffic through the area until early next year.

During the construction work, three of the four lanes will be closed. The one remaining lane will open for alternating traffic with signalers or traffic lights.

The bridge will remain open for cyclists and pedestrians during this period and marine traffic will not be affected, according to Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC).

The lane closures will start on June 26 and the work is expected to continue until January of 2024.

“PSPC encourages users to exercise caution when travelling on the bridge and thanks them for their patience,” read a statement issued by the federal government about the work project.

Through the ongoing work on the bridge — which carries Eastport Dr. across the canal — wider sidewalks are now in place to provide more room for pedestrians and cyclists to both pass safely at the same time.

Constructed in 1961, the 381-ft bridge is the sixth bridge to span the canal since 1830. The lift allows vessels to enter and exit Hamilton Harbour into Lake Ontario.
