Halton police say officers issued over 1,300 warnings and laid close to 2,000 charges after the school year started in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills.
In a news release, police say the service “revved up” its online tips to educate drivers on the ABCs (Always Be Cautious) of road safety, while also increasing enforcement efforts in school and community safety zones. Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 8, police laid 1,947 charges and issued 1,389 warnings.
Police say the most common offences were failing to stop at a stop sign, speeding, failing to display two license plates and driving while holding a hand-held device.
The enforcement blitz was part of the services’s Project Safe Start program.
“We’d like to thank the public, our community partners, and the media for their continued support of Project Safe Start. While the campaign has officially wrapped up for another year, our work is by no means done,” said Halton Police Chief Stephen J. Tanner in a statement.
“We ask that you do your job as drivers to obey the rules of the road, and trust that we will be doing our job to enforce them. Road safety is a year-round priority, and we’re committed to making our roads safer for you, and children across our Region. Together, let’s not just have a safe start, but a safe year.”
