Students at catholic schools in Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills got to show off their creative side in creative contest put on by the Halton Catholic District School Board.

As part of HCDSB’s Education Week held Apr. 4 to 25, students in all grades submitted entries using their own creative ways expressing how the scriptural quote inspiring this year’s theme is reflected on how we treat and respect one another: “If we love one another, God Lives in Us” (1 John 4:12 in the bible).

The creative contest featured four winners in different grade categories. Winners announced Wednesday (May 8) included:

KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 3 WINNER

Grade 3 student Fernanda De Olaguibel, from St. Scholastica Catholic Elementary School in Milton, put together a book narration video for her winning entry.

De Olaguibel shows a picture book she put together, turning with a page of a picture of Saint Benedict Parish in Milton and then shows a picture of herself with Father Larry from the church.

“I asked Father Larry a question and the question was how we can love one another,” said De Olaguibel in the video. “He said ‘We can love one another from our hearts, which motivates us to be kind and do good deeds for each other.’”

GRADE 4 to 6 WINNER

The ESC Grade 6 class at Georgetown’s St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School used sign language in a video to relay the lyrics in the song “Count on Me” by Bruno Artist.

GRADE 7 to 8 WINNER

Grade 8 student Maya Bakun, from Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Elementary School in Milton, drew a pencil crayon sketch of Jesus.

Grade 9 to 12 WINNER

Grade 10 student Ema Brinjak, from St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School, did a video of her performing an original song that included the lyrics, “Stuck in the dark, hoping to find my way.”
