Car enthusiasts were in for a surprise during a meetup at a Burlington mall last night (Feb. 25).

According to Halton Regional Police, the gathering at Mapleview Mall allowed officers to check several vehicles, searching for modifications that are not allowed.

Police say the blitz resulted in 42 charges against car owners, mostly for those who had modified exhaust systems.

There are many reasons why car owners modify their exhaust systems. Most do so to increase performance, but others just like the sensation of power created with a louder vehicle that comes with an altered muffler. Police often refer to these vehicles as “noisemakers.”

In Ontario, modifying an exhaust system that will increase noise is illegal.

An illegal radar detector was also seized from one of the vehicles.

Police say most of the drivers who are facing fines do not live in the area.
