Cannabis facility granted special three-year bylaw extension in Milton

A Milton area business has caught some extra wind in its sales, as it has been given another three-year extension for cannabis-related operations.

Earlier this week, Milton city officials gave the green light for a bylaw extension allowing the Trichome Hills Corporation  — a vertical cannabis farm — three more years of operational capacity within the Milton area.

The reasoning behind this decision — according to Trichome Hills’ co-founder David Phillips — is due to a major policy shift that was implemented several years ago when the facility first opened.

“When we signed the lease, we were told [by the building owner] that it was cannabis friendly and that there were no issues. However, it turned out that within several days, new bylaws came out that impacted us,” Phillips told INhalton.com.

As a result of the red tape the company encountered post-lease signing, the Trichome Hills Corporation was then offered a three-year special bylaw extension for cannabis-adjacent operations.

The same policy that was just renewed this week for another three years.

Phillips went on to indicate that the location does not operate in any farming capacity, meaning that while they operate as a nursery for cannabis plants, they do not produce any actual flower — the main product found in cannabis dispensaries.

“What we do here is more based on genetics, as we function as more of a nursery to cannabis holders… essentially it’s like growing tomato plants without a tomato,” says Phillips.

Given the turbulence of the cannabis industry over the past few years, with many companies shutting down numerous wings of operation, Phillips is happy with the extension provided by the city, as it gives his organization the time to help the overall cannabis industry maneuver what comes next.

“What with all the boom and the bust, this is what we are kind of here for, to help these companies make money — and half the battle is in genetics — so as far as the industry goes, we are here to help,” says Phillips.

Phillips then told INhalton that he and his team are excited about what the next three years will look like for Trichome Hills, the cannabis industry and Milton’s place in it.
