Burlington wants to know how to spend your money

With projections pointing to an almost 8 per cent hike in taxes next year, Burlington is providing residents and business owners the opportunity to have a say in the budget process.

Some of the questions asked in the survey include rating the services already provided, whether you are willing to pay more taxes to improve services and what spending priorities should be.
In June the City of Burlington presented its initial budget forecast for 2024 which points to a 7.82 per cent tax increase next year.
The figures are initial projections as budget deliberations intensify later this year. The survey is the first official step.
Information provided in the initial budget report shows that pressures on the City that are driving costs include inflation, growth, reduced funding opportunities and upgrading aging infrastructure.
“Burlington is a growing, changing and ever-improving city,” the preliminary budget report presented in June states. “Similar to 2023, the 2024 Budget will require significant investment to ensure residents continue to receive the programs and services that provide for the high quality of life in Burlington.”
Significantly, the report says the City remains in a state of “catch up” as services and amenities have not kept pace with population growth.
