Burlington has just received a massive investment of $17-million from provincial and federal governments toward public transit.
A City of Burlington release from today (Nov. 12) specified that this cash injection is designed to improve and modernize transit incentives throughout the region.
“Transit use in Burlington is on the rise, with many residents relying on it every day to access work, school and vital services. The federal government is proud to support expansion and improvements to the local public transit system so it can continue to meet the needs of our growing city for years to come,” said Karina Gould, Member of Parliament for Burlington in an official statement.
The first area of improvement the money will be going toward is the 15 new hybrid and electric buses that are scheduled to replace older models.
Additional incentives include a massive overhaul of transit routes — specifically —by ensuring all routes operate on a 15 to 20 minute arrival standard.
Final enhancements to Burlington Transit also included six new specialized vehicles on top of the 15 Hybrid/EV additions, all of which are designed to provide specialized services for those with limited mobility.
Digital signage at transit stops will also be improved.
“Through these strategic investments, we are taking proactive steps towards increasing mobility services that are reliable, efficient and innovative for Burlington residents. At the same time, we are reducing our carbon footprint and promoting the long-term sustainability of our transit network,” said Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward.
