A brazen burglar robbed a Burlington convenience store and then tried to set the building ablaze.

According to police reports, around 2 a.m. this morning (Oct. 18) someone smashed through the glass door of A&M Variety on Lakeshore Rd.

Once inside the empty store, the thief grabbed cigarettes and lottery tickets. However, before making their escape, the culprit set fire to the cash area.

Halton police say the smoke activated the store’s sprinkler system which was able to contain the fire until emergency crews arrived at the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Damage to the store is estimated at $50,000.

Police are still investigating and there is no suspect information.
