Drivers along one of Milton’s busiest roadways will have another two years of construction until a widening project is complete.

Construction on Britannia Road (Regional Road 6), a critical east-west corridor in Milton, started in September 2019.

The widening from two lanes to six lanes is meant to accommodate growth and improve traffic flow, a spokesperson from Halton Region says.

The first phase of the three-phase project  — from Tremaine Road to Regional Road 25 — was finished in February of 2022.

The second and third phases — from James Snow Parkway to Highway 407 and from Regional Road 25 to James Snow Parkway — started in June 2021.

Phases 2 and 3 are expected to be completed by the end of 2024, the spokesperson said.

In addition to road widening, the project includes two new bridges crossing Sixteen Mile Creek (Main Branch and East Branch); on-road bike lanes; multi-use pathways; new signalized intersections and street lighting; and new trunk watermains, wastewater mains and storm sewers.

During the construction, drivers can expect more truck traffic around the ongoing work, dust and mud.

Trees will either be pruned or removed. But new trees will be planted once construction is complete.
