The ceiling is coming into place and the pool deck is taking shape as work on the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex moves ahead.

The Town of Oakville provided an update Wednesday (Oct. 2) on the expansion of the community centre, posting a brief video on social media and listing the work being done on the facility.

“We’re making big strides,” said the Town.

Current work being done includes:

  • Cross-laminated timber decking is presently being installed on the ceiling.
  • Slab on grade (first floor) concrete pour expected next week.
  • Site works and grading – concrete curbs west parking complete.
  • Vapour barrier installation in progress on the roof.
  • Pool deck pour complete.
  • Construction work is ongoing at the existing stairs in the arena.
  • Construction work in the existing Arena Four to strengthen the roof structure is expected to be completed late next week.
  • Sprinkler rough-in for level one is being delivered next week.

Formerly known as North Park, the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex project includes a park, community centre, and library.

The multi-use community centre will feature aquatic facilities, a fitness/active living centre, and flexible multi-use space to accommodate seniors, youth, and cultural programming and gymnasiums.

Other project highlights are:

  • A community park with two additional lit sports fields (one with artificial turf), a cricket field, a skateboard park, a bike pump track, basketball courts, a splash pad, a children’s playground, a fieldhouse, and a washroom facility.
  • An Oakville Public Library branch with work and study spaces (including collaboration spaces), a creation and media zone, reading and conversation areas, children’s and teen spaces, flexible programming spaces, public computers, and wi-fi.
  • Accessibility features include barrier-free parking and vehicle access close to accessible entrances and pathways and wayfinding that will be lit when it’s dark. Inside the community centre, all washrooms will have hands-free flush valves, faucets, soap dispensers, and hand dryers and the pools will have accessible ramp entry.
  • Renewable energy technologies and green building standards will be applied, including having the building LEED-certified, taking a net-zero carbon and low-energy design approach, and exploring technology and design (self-tinting electro-chromatic glass, solar walls, sensor-controlled LED lighting, and more).

Earlier this May, the sports fields and cricket opened. The other park features are planned to be completed later this year.

The community centre and library will open in 2025.

The Sixteen Mile Sports Complex is located at 3170 Neyagawa Boulevard.
