Halton police have laid multiple charges after a series of residential break-ins that investigators say targeted several homes in Burlington’s Palmer neighbourhood in a single morning.
The investigation began following incidents on May 23, when a suspect allegedly moved through the neighbourhood and targeted six separate homes. According to police, two residences were successfully broken into, while attempts were made to enter four others.
Investigators say entry was gained through unlocked rear patio doors, with the suspect allegedly stealing property, including credit and bank cards. Those cards were later used to make unauthorized purchases in both Burlington and Hamilton.
The case was taken over by officers with the 3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau, who were able to identify a suspect during the course of the investigation.
On June 23, police executed a Criminal Code search warrant at a residence in Hamilton, where the suspect was located and arrested. Officers also recovered multiple pieces of evidence, including stolen electronics and jewelry, believed to be linked to the Burlington break-ins.
As a result, King Umuhizi, 24, of Hamilton, has been charged with two counts of break and enter, four counts of attempted break and enter, three counts of fraud under $5,000, and one count of failing to comply with probation. Police say the accused has been held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.
Investigators are asking anyone with additional information about the case to contact the 3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2316, or to submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
