Update: 5 million bees fall off a truck in Burlington, drivers advised to roll up windows

Bee careful in Burlington today — a load of five million bees fell off a truck this morning.

The truck lost its load of five million bees on Guelph Line, north of Dundas Street in Burlington this morning (Aug. 30), Halton Regional Police said in a tweet around 7:15 a.m.

Police suggested residents and drivers close their windows.

Pedestrians should avoid area until clear, police said.

A photo from the scene shows beekeeper wooden housing structures on the side of the road.

Beekeepers were called in help out, police said. There were reports beekeepers were stung.

The situation is unusual and people didn’t waste time commenting.

“Will be quite the buzz around town today,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“That area will bee a hive of activity all day!” another wrote.

“That’s gotta sting,” still one more person wrote.

Other people found the good side of the story.

“In positive news – local flowers have an increased chance of being pollinated,” one person wrote.

Update: At 9:12 a.m. police said that thanks to the overwhelming response from beekeepers coming to help, they expect the scene to be clear in approximately 30 minutes.

The majority of the bees have been safely collected and crates will be hauled away, police said.
