A group of local volunteers began the process today (Sept. 26) of making Burlington a little more greener.

The volunteers, along with members of the environmental group BurlingtonGreen and City of Burlington employees, planted 325 trees in Bromley Park on Maureen Court.

The planting was part of an initiative to celebrate National Forest Week.

Trees selected for the park are all native to the area and meant to replenish the urban canopy.

Several other events were held this week to celebrate National Forest Week including a tree giveaway, a webinar on tree maintenance and the opening of the annual BurlingtonGreen tree photo contest.

For the past two years, Burlington has been recognized by a United Nations agency as a “Tree City of the World” for its leadership in urban community forestry.

To earn Tree Cities of the World recognition, a city must demonstrate its commitment by meeting five program standards: establish responsibility for the care of trees, set rules to govern the management of forests and trees, maintain an updated inventory or assessment of local tree resources, allocate resources for a tree management plan, and hold an annual celebration of trees to educate residents.
