Burlington fire firefighter townhouse arson

A fire that destroyed six townhouses at a Burlington construction site yesterday (Aug. 2) caused $3 million in damage, according to initial reports.

The row of empty homes was being built as part of a Branthaven development in the Appleby Line and Taywood Dr. area.

There was no electricity in the homes which firefighters found entirely engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene around 4:30 a.m. Workers were not yet on the site and there were no injuries.

The six homes were completely destroyed as was a work trailer. Some neighbouring units also received some damage.

While no cause has been listed, the fire is under investigation and the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to assist.

The fire destroyed nearby power lines which led to 3,000 customers in the area being without electricity for several hours. Only a few customers remain without power.

Traffic was also diverted around the area for several hours
