A car group of three became one this afternoon after police impounded two vehicles which clocked at speeds more than twice the 60 km/h limit on rural roads in Milton.
In a social media post, Halton police reported that one vehicle was caught speeding at 106 km/h while another was observed travelling at 126 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. The speed of a third vehicle in the group remains unclear. Police did not specify the roads or nearest intersections where the vehicles were stopped.
Two vehicles were subsequently impounded, with their drivers now facing stunt driving charges under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, police said.
In Ontario, stunt driving is defined as travelling at:
- 50 km/h or more over the speed limit where the posted limit is above 80 km/h
- 40 km/h or more over where the limit is 80 km/h or less
- a speed of 150 km/h or more on any road or highway
In addition to speeding charges, drivers could also face other penalties, including:
- A driving suspension
- Towing and impoundment of the vehicle at the owner’s expense
- Mandatory court appearance, with a potential jail sentence of up to six months
- Fines of up to $10,000
Police noted in their post that while winter is near and scenic drives through Milton’s rural roads may be tempting, speeding is unacceptable.
