Work alongside police in Burlington, Milton, Oakville by volunteering for Auxiliary Unit

Halton police are looking for volunteers from Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills to join their Auxiliary Unit.

“This is an opportunity for anyone who has been looking for a volunteer opportunity to help serve the community and who has always wanted to learn about policing,” said a spokesperson.

“Our Volunteers come from unique backgrounds but are commonly interested in helping others in the community by offering social support, through communication, companionship, and problem-solving techniques.”

Auxiliary officers, who sign up for a two-year commitment, augment the activities of police officers at various events across the region such fall fairs, Christmas parades, and summer festivals (i.e. Burlington Sound of Music).

“You will work alongside under officers in a variety of settings and situations which includes community policing programs like Neighbourhood Watch, Bicycle Safety, R.I.D.E, crime prevention and handing out educational material; guarding crime scenes to protect evidence; search for missing persons; routine crowd, traffic, or parade control; and operational ride-a-longs.

The police service is looking for people who are passionate and eager to make a positive impact in their community and embed a culture of compassion, caring and safety

The Auxiliary Unit has been in operation since 1989. Auxiliary Officers receive more than 100 hours of training, including legal training in powers of arrest, ethics, traffic direction and use of force training.

Successful volunteers will be asked to commit to two years of volunteer service. Full training will be provided.

They must be willing to dedicate a minimum of hours of duty per month in addition to the yearly training and unit meetings as well as be willing to serve anywhere at anytime throughout the region.

  • To be considered for this volunteer position, you must:
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or equivalent
  • Not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been fully granted
  • Be a fully licensed driver in Ontario having accumulated no more than six demerit points
  • Be physically able to perform the duties of an Auxiliary Officer
  • Be of good moral character

The successful applicant will need to pass a background check to the satisfaction of the Service which will include reference checks with previous employers, verification of educational achievements, and a criminal background screen.
